Saturday, September 20, 2008

Organizers of the World 10-Ball Championships are banking on a host of foreign cue artists to be the main draw in the week-long tournament, which will be missing the country’s top pool players.

A total of 128 players will vie for the $400,000 purse at stake, $100,000 of which goes to the champion of the tournament slated from September 29 to October 5 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Raya Sports and Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) president Yen Makabenta said former Asian snooker champion Marlon Manalo and 2006 Doha Asian Games gold medalist Antonio Gabica will lead the country’s campaign against reigning World 9-Ball champion Daryl Peach of Great Britain, former titlists Ralf Souquet and Thomas Engert of Germany, Chinese-Taipei’s Wu Chia-Ching and Americans Johnny Archer and Shane Van Boening.

Jeffrey de Luna, Elvis Calasang, Elmer Kalaquian, Jerico Banares and Mario Tolentino will also carry the Philippine colors in the tournament.

The tournament will have 128 players divided into 16 groups in the winner's-break elimination format. The top four from each group will advance into the 64-man knockout stage.

A winner-take-all match for third place will be played on October 5 while the title match between the top two cue artists begins at 5pm.

Philippine Vice President Noli De Castro will be the tournament’s guest of honor during the opening ceremony on September 29 at the PICC.

Manalo, six others head RP’s World 10-Ball bid

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Reigning World 9-Ball champion Daryl Peach of Great Britain, Ralf Souquet and Thomas Engert of Germany, Chinese-Taipei’s Wu Chia-ching and Americans Johnny Archer and Shane Van Boening are the favorites when the Philippines hosts the first World 10-Ball Championships at the Philippine International Convention Center starting Sept. 29.

Around 40 countries representing 128 of the world’s best pool players are vying for the total $400,000 purse at stake, $100,000 of which goes to the champion.

A seven-man contingent will banner the local side, led by former Asian snooker champion Marlon Manalo, Doha Asian Games gold medalist Antonio Gabica, Jeffrey de Luna, Elvis Calasang, Elmer Kalaquian, Jerico Banares and Mario Tolentino.

Tournament format will have the players grouped into 16 seeing action in the winner’s break elimination.

The top four from each group will advance into the 64-man knockout stage.

A winner-take-all match for third place will be played during the final day, preceding the championship game that begins 5 p.m.

“This is going to be the biggest international billiards tournament in the country since, I believe, the World 9-Ball Championship has been postponed for next year,” said Raya Sports president Yen Makabenta of the tournament that ends on Oct. 5.

Makabenta, also the chair of the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines, appeared at yesterday’s PSA Forum at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch.

A five-day qualifying meet is slated on Sept. 23-27 at the Star Billiards Center to complete the cast of players seeing action in the main tournament.

“It would be good if everybody would take part,” said Makabenta in the forum supported by Shakey’s, Accel, Brickroad gym and Aspen spa and MedCentral Medical Clinic.

Despite the absence of some of the country’s pool pride, Makabenta said the 10-ball “leaves little room for luck.”

Marlon Manalo Eyeing World Ten Ball Crown After Winning National Pool

For Marlon Manalo, winning the 3rd Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) National Pool Championships gave confidence to him as he eyes a more ambitious dream to win a world championships crown in next month inauguration of WPA World Ten Ball Championship.

Dubbed as "Marvelous" in the world of pool, the Mandaluyong ace campaigner bested 2006 Doha Asian Games 9-ball gold medalist Antonio "Ga-Ga" Gabica, 11-5, in the finals on Sunday to add the 3rd BSCP National Pool Championships to his growing list of achievements.

Jeffrey "The Bull" De Luna, the 2007 Manny Pacquiao International 9-Ball Champion, meanwhile turned back fast-rising Elmer "Buddy" Kalaquian, 9-3, to settle for third. Monette Oryan on the other hand, trounced Floriza Andal, 9-6, in the finals to emerge 2008 Women's National Pool Champion.

"Winning a national championship is a very big accomplishment and achievement, and I'm very happy for this win," Manalo told to this writer in an interview yesterday.

"I hope to continue my winning ways in the inauguration of WPA World Ten Ball Championships next month here in Manila," added the Jose Rizal University (JRU) BS Economics graduate Manalo, who lost twice in a world championship.

It shall be recalled that the 2000 Asian Snooker Titlist nearly won his first world title at the 2004 WPA World Eight-Ball Championship in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, but lost to his compatriot and pool maestro Efren "Bata" Reyes, by a score of 11-8 in the finals.

His second attempt was the 2005 WPA World Nine-Ball Championship in Kaohsiung, Taiwan where he lost to eventual champion and local bet Wu Chia-ching, in the semifinal round.

Manalo, a multiple Southeast Asian Games medalist start making waves in the US Pool Circuit in 2005 by winning the prestigious Reno 9-Ball Open, New Jersey Straight Pool Open and more importantly the Hold'em Billiards Championship where he earned the large US $100,000 winner-take-all purse.

In 2006, Manalo pocketed US$99,000 after settling for 2nd place after losing to IPT International 8-Ball ruler Thorsten "The Hitman" Hohmann of Germany who won the mammoth US$350,000 first prize.

Manalo Beats Gabica; Enters Final Four in BSCP National Pool Championships

Sunday, September 7, 2008

"I just lucky because the ball always favor in my side," said Manalo, a former Asian snooker kingpin, who hails from Mandaluyong City.

It was a revenge of sorts for Manalo, who lost to Gabica in the finals of the Philippine Pool Tour Ten Ball tournament in Mandaluyong City early this year.

Elmer "Buddy" Kalaquian, defeated Silverio Tulabing, 9-7, to join Manalo in the final four of this BSCP event held in partnership with Star Billiards, Raya Sports and the Philippine Billiards Foundation.

By advancing into the semifinals, Manalo and Kalaquian have now secured berths for the inaugural staging of the WTBC which begins Sept 29th at the Philippine International Convention Center.  They will join a cast of 102 players who have so far booked seats in the event organized by Raya Sports.

Four other players – Gabica, Jeffrey De Luna, Elvis Calasang and Tulabing – are still vying for slots for the semifinals.
The four will also vie for the remaining two slots for the WTBC, which is sanctioned by the World Pool Association, the world's governing body in billiard.

Marlon Manalo Off to Good Start in Puerto Pool Tour

Friday, June 20, 2008

Marlon "Marvelous" Manalo, the 2005 World Pool Championships 3rd placer, got off to a good start in the Puerto Princesa Mayor's Cup, the second leg of the Philippine Pool Tour Ten Ball event here at the Puerto Princesa Coliseum Friday.

The 30-year-old Manalo, who hails from Mandaluyong City and is one of the top players of Philippine Billiards Development Foundation (PBDF) outlasted Te-Chung Chien of Chinese-Taipei, 9-6, to face youthful sensation Jordan Legaspi of Bocaue, Bulacan in the next round, a 9-7 winner over Mario "Aklan" Tolentino.

"I was just lucky in the end game," Manalo referring his three consecutive racks to reach the hill at 8-5 count before beating Chien, 9-6, in this double-elimination format organized by the Billiards and Snookers Congress of the Philippines in partnership with Star Billiards Center and supported by San Miguel Beer and Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn and the city of information office headed by Alroben Goh.

" I hope to perform well in this event," added Manalo, who bowed to eventual winner and 2006 Doha Asian Games 9-Ball gold medalist Antonio "Ga-Ga" Gabica in the finals of the 1st leg Mandaluyong Mayor's Cup of Philippine Pool Tour.

Sharing the limelight is 2006 Doha Asian Games 9-ball silver medalist Jeffrey "The Bull" De Luna, also a member of the PBDF who crushed veteran internationalist Edgar "Malabon" Acaba, 9-1, to set up a rematch with his former rival in the Guinness 9-Ball event reigning World Junior Champion Pin-Yi Ko of Taiwan, who beat little-known  Junbert Ogang, 9-3. Ko defeated De Luna, 9-3, in the quarterfinals of the Taipei leg.

Taking advantage of his breaking power against an older opponent, the good-looking De Luna wasted no time and raced to an early 8-0 cushion. He did miss in the ninth rack and allowed Acaba to notch his first point, but finished the job in the 10th when his veteran rival muffed the green ball No.6.

"I respect him (Edgar Acaba) so much because he is a veteran player" said De Luna, who barely made the cut for the Puerto Princesa tournament after emerging from the loser's bracket. Acaba conceded afterwards with still three balls remaining.

"I didn't expect to have this win so easy because all the competitors here are considered favorites," said Ko thru his interpreter Hans Lu, owner of Pool Fusion Billiard Hall in Manila. "It's going to be a more difficult match facing De Luna."

Ko, who became widely-acknowledged for coming back from a 4-14 deficit before beating Dennis Orcollo, 15-14, in the Thailand Open, had a strong start this time.

The crowd favorite Ko raced to a 2-0 lead, padded the advantage to 8-3 before closing out the win to the delight of the screaming teenage fans. Against Ko, De Luna believes breaks of the game will be will be an advantage considering that it will be a winner's break format.

Hagedorn lauded the opening of the event where he is joined by several sports personalities that include Air21 owner and Philippine cycling head Bert Lina, Billiards and Snookers Congress of the Philippines chairman and head of Raya Sports Yen Makabenta, long-time billiards supporter and Star Billiards head Sebastian Chua and motocross legend Butch Chase.

"This is line with the campaign of the city to become the sports capital of the Philippines," said Mayor Hagedorn, whose city also hosted Batang Pinoy, Olympic Boxing qualifier, PBA games, Sepak Takraw International and Palawan Open Chess to name a few."

Also winning yesterday were reigning World 8-Ball champion Ralf Souquet of Germany and giant-slayer Kenji Taguchi of Japan. Souquet made short work of unheralded Oliver Villafuerte, 9-2, while Taguchi crushed Rocky Tullao, 9-4. All participants in this $30,000 event are guaranteed $200 with the winner pocketing $10,000.

Manalo Downs Hohmann To Enter Final Four

Saturday, May 10, 2008

Hometown favorite Marlon Manalo bested German ace Thorsten Hohmann in a duel of the undefeated in Day 4 of the Mandaluyong Mayor's Cup, and booked himself a seat in the Final Four of the inaugural event of the Philippine Pool Tour.

The exciting match went down to the last rack and the last ball before it was settled with Manalo on top, 9-8. He sealed the deal with a crafty safety play on the four ball. Although Hohmann managed to hit the 4-ball, he left Manalo an open shot, which he promptly turned into a runout.

The victory was a revenge of sorts for the guy they call "Marvelous". In 2006, he met and lost to Hohmann in the finals of the IPT North America 8-Ball Championship – also a hill-hill thriller.

The Mandaluyong field which started with 64 players was reduced Friday night to eight players – two in the winners' bracket, and six in the losers' bracket.

The other big winner on Day 4 was Antonio Gabica, reigning 2007 San Miguel Philippine Open champion. He downed another Filipino standout, Mario Tolentino, by the score of 9-5.

Trailing 3-1, Gabica came storming back by taking five straight racks before Tolentino could take another rack. From there, Gabica coasted to the finish line.

Hohmann and Tolentino are not out of the hunt. They now move to the losers bracket in Day 5, where they will try to book themselves seats in the Final Four.

On the losers' bracket, Chien-Te Chung of Taiwan remained in contention. He won three times yesterday, besting James Al Ortega (9-5), Junbert Ogang (9-5), and Kenji Taguchi of Japan (9-2).

18-year-old Jerico Banares, reigning Philippine Junior Champion continued to impress pool aficionados and the media. In a match between a junior and a senior, he downed 58-year-old Gerry Watson of Canada, 9-6, to book himself a place in the last eight.

"Who is this guy?" Watson declared with good humor afterwards. "He didn't miss a shot!"

Leonardo Didal took perhaps the biggest scalp in the tournament. He ousted Johnny Archer of the United States, 9-7. He scored two other victories: against Gilbert Carbonera 9-5, and against Tomoo Tanaka of Japan, 9-5,

The final name in the Last Eight is talented veteran Leonardo Andam. He began Day 4 with a nail-biting thriller against Raymond Faraon (9-8), and then mowed down Courtney Symons of England (9-4) and Allan Soliman (9-2).

The six players in the Losers Bracket – Thorsten Hohmann, Mario Tolentino, Chien-Te Chung, Jerico Banares, Leonardo Didal and Leonardo Andam – will see action Saturday (May 10) to decide who will be the two players to enter the Final Four in Sunday's finale. Marlon Bernardino

IPT Challenge Match 3: Marlon Manalo Vs Rodney Morris

Thursday, February 14, 2008

The International Pool Tour presents "East vs. West II," the third of the new IPT Challenge Match Series. The two countries that are represented in this challenge are both powerhouses in the world of pool.

The United States of America has been one of the most dominant pool countries for over 100 years! Rodney Morris is one of the American players at the top of game in the U.S. However, the Philippines has produced many of the game's greatest players of the last 30 years, and Marlon Manalo is yet another piece of evidence that the Philippines continues to produce! The two players competing in this match have something big in common- they were both Runners-Up in the two largest tournaments in the history of the sport of pool!

Manalo lost on the hill in the International Pool Tour's North American Open, on live TV across Europe! Morris had a similar fate in losing a close match to pool legend Efren Reyes in the IPT's World Open, broadcast live on the World Wide Web.

Both players are proud to represent their respective countries in what will surely be an awesome match. They are going to clash live, on a free broadcast on the International Pool Tour web site. The live match will take place on Tuesday, March 4th, 2008 at 9pm (eastern). The game is 8-Ball, and the first player to win fifteen games takes the match. Viewers can watch the live stream absolutely free by being a Basic Member of the IPT web site. We suggest registering early so that viewers don't miss the beginning of the live broadcast.

Player Spotlight Marlon Manalo

Monday, January 7, 2008

Q: Where were you raised, Mr. Manalo?

Marlon: I was raised in Mandaluyong City, with my father Claro M. Manalo as my coach and mentor and with his loving wife Caridad Manalo. We have six in the family- 3 boys and 3 girls. I am the 2nd youngest child.

Q: When were you first introduced to pool? By whom?

Marlon: I was introduced to pool by my father, Claro Manalo, who used to manage local pool players here in the Philippines. It was 1988 when I first held a pool stick.

Q: What is your regular practice regimen? Where do you play?

Marlon: I have a pool saloon here in Mandaluyon City, Philippines with 12 tables where I used to practice. At the same time I was in the Philippine national team and we had a practice venue supervised by our national coach Mr. Ricardo Ancaja. We had to be there at least three times a week.

Q: There is lots of pressure in pool, how do you get your head in the game before a match?

Marlon: The most pressured game that I ever encountered was in the International Pool Tour events, especially when you think of the huge prize that you are possibly going to win. This money and pressure have never happened in the history of pool, until Mr. Kevin Trudeau made it not only a dream but a reality. We really thank him, all the staff and officials of IPT for that. Before the big match, like in the IPT, I have a pep talk with myself and remember that I can only win inside the four corners of the table. I have to focus 100 percent. I have to think one rack at a time and live for the moment. I never think of the audience, spectators, and the prize that you may win. That only adds pressure on me.

Q: What kind of music do you like?

Marlon: It depends on my mood.

Q: What is your favorite pastime besides pool?

Marlon: I usually go to the shooting range at least 3 times a week. I also love hanging out with my family and friends, and swimming.

Q: You have traveled the world. What is your favorite cuisine?

Marlon: Before I loved eating Japanese and Chinese cuisine, but now I’m trying to eat fish and other seafood as much as possible.

Q: What do you normally eat for dinner at home?

Marlon: Eating my favorite food is only secondary. The most important part of dinner for me is eating with my family or friends. That's what I really enjoy.

Q: What is the worst place you have ever had to sleep while on the road?

Marlon: So far I haven’t had a bad one except in Johannesberg,
South Africa, in 1994 during a World Championship in snooker. We were staying in a Holiday Inn where guests were not allowed to go out of the hotel for
security reasons.

Q: Who is your idol in pool? Outside of pool?

Marlon: Willie Mosconi in pool because I can relate my life to him with having his father as his mentor. Outside of pool, I would have to say, aside from my father, Fernando Poe, Jr. is my idol. He is our movie king here in Philippine cinema and in real life he is not only a philanthropist, but what ever great deeds he does for others he would never announce them publicly. He is a great person inside and out.

Q: Where do you hope to be in 5 years?

Marlon: If the IPT comes back in full swing then I will concentrate more on pool. If not, just in case, I will concentrate on business. I also hope in the next 5 years I will achieve my goal as becoming the world champion.

Q: What was your initial reaction to facing Rodney Morris in the IPT Challenge Match?

Marlon: It will be a very exiting match since both of us were runner-ups in the IPT events, which were the biggest in the history of the sport. I think both of us will do our best to win this match. Facing a great player like Rodney is a big challenge for me. May the best athlete win!!!

Q: Can you predict the outcome?

Marlon: Rodney is a great player with a big heart so we are both champions. I can only predict it will be a very exiting match and whoever gets the roll will most likely win.
